Your drive belt is very important. It powers your power steering pump, a/c compressor and your alternator. So when it goes, you stop. It's that simple. (Well, you can drive a few miles if your belt breaks because the battery will power your spark plugs. But after that, you may as well call the tow truck.)
If your belt goes, your air conditioning doesn't operate. This can be dangerous for infants, sick passengers, and the elderly. And you may find difficult (if not impossible) to steer your Trooper when the belt breaks. No belt, not power steering.
Most car, truck, van and SUV manuals recommend that you have your drive belt inspected every 12 months or 15,000 miles. You can tell when a belt is wearing. It has streaks on the sidewall of the belt (which could also mean it is not adjusted properly), fraying, cracks, separation of the belt "piles" breaks, "glazing" (a shiny area anywhere on the belt), tears, or oil soaking.
Oil soaking means there is an oil leak somewhere, in the engine, transmission, or power steering apparatus. Seek out and stop a leak if you have one.
