Trooper Part Store - Isuzu Trooper Facts and History

The Japanese manufacturer Isuzu produced the mid-sized Trooper from 1981-2002. Exported worldwide, it was a huge success in the sport utility market. Nameplates included the Isuzu Bighorn, Honda Horizon, Isuzu Trooper, Chevrolet Trooper, Acura SLX, Holden Jackeroo, and Vauxhall/Opel Monterey.

First generation Troopers were produced from 1981-1991, the second generation from 1992-2002. First generation Troopers were somewhat primitive and underpowered, coming off the production line with a four-cylinder motor, five-speed manual transmission and part-time four wheel drive. More luxurious models appeared later, offering additional options and amenities, including a V6 motor. Second generation Troopers were even more refined and were available with two-wheel drive.

First Generation

First generation models were offered in two- or four-door versions with independent front suspension and a solid rear axle. These early vehicles had either a 2.0 L gas motor or a 2.2 L diesel. Critics felt these engines did not provide enough power considering the vehicle's weight - approximately 3700 lbs. empty. The vehicle's four-wheel drive system implored the driver to engage the front axle by using a three-position shifter located adjacent to the transmission shifter. Both Isuzu's own auto-locking hubs and Aisin manual-locking hubs were available. Isuzu introduced a 2.3 L engine in 1986. Although this motor developed only 112 HP (102 kW), it was thought to be a big improvement over the previous engines. In 1987, Isuzu introduced its first fuel-injected engine.

During these years, imported SUVs were securing increasingly larger market shares. To combat declining profits, governments responded with tariffs. To avoid these tariffs, Isuzu like other manufacturers, engaged in a little creative loophole jumping by having the dealers install the rear seats, thereby claiming that this so-called Trooper II was really a car, not an SUV.

For 1989 only, a 90", short wheelbase Trooper was targeted to the US market. These vehicles were equipped with 2.6L fuel-injected four-cylinder engines. Small first generation versions were also marketed in Central America. These had a higher wheel clearance and removable roofs. Most came equipped with the Isuzu 2.9 L turbo diesel, medium-RPM, slightly modified engine that people also used for generators, portable freezers, and boats. It was easily repaired and got better than 46 MPG. Owners and drivers admire this model for its reliability and simplicity, but because Isuzu has ceased production, finding parts is difficult.

Second Generation

Isuzu completely redesigned the 1991 Trooper. It was heavier at 4510 pounds and, keeping with the trend of the times, was more luxurious and powerful, sporting a 3.2 L single overhead cam or optional 3.2 L dual overhead cam engine.

For 1992, the SUB Series ("Holden Jackaroo" in Australia) was introduced. Available with an inter-cooled turbodiesel, this rugged fuel-efficient motor, used for towing and other heavy-duty applications, has established a reputation for excellent durability and reliability.

During this time, Honda and Isuzu worked together, producing the Honda Horizon for Japan, and the Acura SLX for the U.S.

The Isuzu stopped production of the Trooper in model year 2003 but sold it in the Philippines until model year 2005. Market watchers expect to see a new European Trooper in 2009.
