Trooper care can be fun. It may seem like work, you will find it doesn't take that much energy to keep your Trooper clean and running well.
You can do simple things yourself like change the oil, install new wiper blades, rotate the tires, and washing/waxing.
Check out rotating the tires in your owner's manual. You will find a drawing that diagrams which tire goes where, so that your Trooper's tires wear evenly and so they can give you maximum service life. Your manual will also tell you after how many miles you need to rotate your tires (typically every 7,500 miles).
If you are going to rotate the tires yourself, you will need two jacks (or a hoist). If you have a hoist, your job will be much easier because you won't have to worry about jacking up the vehicle and moving the jacks around in order to change the position of your tires.
If you do not have access to a hoist, a floor jack works well, along with a jack stand. First place your Trooper in park (or in gear if you have a manual transmission). Don't set the emergency brake because you won't be able to turn the wheels in order to help remove the tires if you do. Loosen, but do not remove the lug nuts of the tire that occupies the spot where the first tire to be rotated will go, then jack up that side of the vehicle with the floor jack. Place the jack stand underneath your Trooper on that part of the car. Remove the tire/rim. Loosen, but do not remove the lug nuts of the tire that you will place where you just previously took off the tire and rim. Now jack up that part of the car and remove the tire/rim and take it over to where you first removed a tire and place it on the axle. Put on the lug nuts and tighten, but not all the way. Once you have lowered the vehicle, then you can tighten the lugs nuts tightly, using a wrench, tire iron or air ratchet.
Follow this procedure for each tire until you have rotated all four. (Remember: if you have a full-size spare, you need to include the spare in the rotation.) Without a hoist, rotating the tires may take as long as an hour of steady work. With a hoist, the time required is probably only half or three-quarter hour.
You will be glad you rotated your tires according to the manufacturer's recommendations because you will notice your tires wearing nice and evenly. Good luck!
In order to do the other tasks mentioned above, changing your Trooper's oil, windshield wiper replacement, and washing/waxing, check into a Trooper repair manual, available through one of our parts dealers, online, or at your local library. A repair manual has a "routine maintenance" section where you can reference these procedures. A Trooper repair manual for your model year is a handy item for small jobs like these, and a necessity for the larger, more complicated items like brake renewal, engine rebuilding, and cooling system/radiator repair.
Enjoy caring for your Trooper. It will be happy you took the time!
